From Transition to Establishment

August arrives at a defining moment.

For the Class of 2026, secondary school is no longer simply a world they are preparing to leave. That chapter has now formally closed, and the Bigger World has begun.

Within our Class of 2026 transition calendar, today is Day 10. The celebrations may not be over, and the full weight of the transition may not yet have settled in, but the clock has started. The decisions taken, habits formed, relationships cultivated and opportunities pursued during these first weeks can shape not only what the coming months become, but also the direction of the years ahead.

In June, we called attention to the importance of transition, preparation and intentional support.

In July, we invited alumni, parents, educators, mentors and other responsible adults to reach back - offering prayer, guidance, encouragement, introductions, sponsorship and practical support to those coming behind them.

August must now become the month in which preparation and goodwill are converted into direction, decisions and disciplined action.

This is the central purpose of the 7 - 30 - 90 Bigger World Agenda: to provide structure for the first 90 days after secondary school and help every participating member of the Class of 2026 move deliberately towards meaningful establishment.

Establishment does not mean having every question answered immediately. It does not mean that every young person must follow the same route, move at the same pace or arrive at the same destination.

It means that no young person should be left indefinitely stranded between school and the next stage of life. It means replacing drift with direction, uncertainty with structured exploration, and passive waiting with responsible action.

By the end of the first 30 days, every participant should be working towards greater clarity about:

• who they are becoming;
• the pathway they intend to pursue;
• the knowledge, skills and resources they need;
• the people and institutions that can support them; and
• the practical actions they must begin taking.

By Day 90, the aspiration is that each participant will have moved into - or be demonstrably progressing towards - a credible next stage: further education, technical or vocational training, employment preparation, enterprise development, service, apprenticeship, skills acquisition or another purposeful pathway.

This August, WhatNext Africa will continue the weekly public engagements supporting the Agenda and begin the public rollout of the Bigger World Portal - a practical platform designed to help participants access guidance, undertake structured reflection, organise their next steps and connect with relevant opportunities and support.

The Portal is intended to provide structure, but no platform, publication or programme can replace the responsibility of the individual or the value of human support. Technology may help organise the journey, but purposeful progress will still require ownership, discipline, counsel, encouragement and sustained engagement.

To every member of the Class of 2026: take ownership of these first 90 days. Rest where necessary, but do not surrender your future to drift. Ask questions. Seek counsel. Build useful routines. Learn deliberately. Document your progress. Pay attention to the opportunities around you. Begin before everything appears perfect, and keep moving even when the entire road is not yet visible.

To parents, alumni, teachers, counsellors, mentors and friends: do not ask only, “What result did you obtain?” Ask also, “What comes next, and how can I help you take the next responsible step?” A conversation, an introduction, a recommendation, a resource, a listening ear or a timely word of guidance may become the difference between prolonged uncertainty and purposeful movement.

To institutions, employers, training providers, professional bodies, communities and development partners: this is an opportunity to open doors, share knowledge, create pathways and help a new generation enter adulthood with greater preparation, guidance and support than many before them received.

Our North Star reaches beyond admission, employment or the first opportunity secured.

We look towards 2036, the tenth anniversary of this transition, with the hope that every participating member of the Class of 2026 will have grown into a capable young professional, a responsible adult, a contributor to society and, in time, someone prepared to reach back for another generation.

The journey will not be completed in August. Many questions will take time to answer, some routes will change, and progress may unfold differently for each person.

But August can become the month in which the journey acquires direction, structure and momentum - the month in which intention begins to take visible form and the first responsible steps towards establishment are taken.

May this new month bring clarity where there is uncertainty, courage where there is fear, discipline where there is distraction, support where there is isolation and open doors for every sincere effort.

May our young people not merely leave school.

May they enter the Bigger World prepared to find their place, fulfil their potential and become worthy successors.
