Democracy, Responsibility and the Future We Must Prepare

 


June 12 occupies a special place in Nigeria's democratic journey. It stands as a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless citizens who believed that the people should have a voice in determining the direction of their nation. It is a day that celebrates courage, participation, accountability, and the enduring pursuit of a more just and prosperous society.

Yet democracy is not sustained by elections alone. It depends on the quality of citizens, leaders, institutions, and values that are passed from one generation to the next. The freedoms we enjoy today were secured by those who came before us. The question before every generation is whether we will leave our nation stronger, more stable, and better prepared for those who will come after us.

This responsibility extends beyond government and politics. It belongs to parents raising children, teachers shaping minds, mentors guiding young people, entrepreneurs creating opportunities, professionals serving with integrity, and communities investing in the common good. The future of democracy is influenced every day by the choices we make, the values we model, and the people we prepare to lead.

As Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day, may we renew our commitment not only to preserving democratic ideals but also to nurturing capable, ethical, resilient, and responsible citizens who can carry those ideals forward.

The strength of tomorrow's Nigeria will ultimately depend on how well we prepare today's young people for the responsibilities that await them.

Abuja, Nigeria - October 2025. As part of its ongoing Stakeholders Engagement on the WhatNext Calendar for the 2025/2026 School Year, WhatNext Africa, led by its Programme Director, Temitope S. Ogunnusi, participated in the 46th Plenary of the Unity Schools Old Students Association (USOSA) held in Abuja.
