NYSC WhatNext Collaboration Inspires Corps Members Nationwide During the 2025 Batch C Orientation Course

 

Abuja, Nigeria - November 27, 2025. The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and WhatNext Africa have continued their landmark NYSC WhatNext Collaboration, delivering a powerful emotional and developmental message to corps members at Orientation Camps nationwide during the ongoing 2025 Batch C Orientation Course. The sessions, designed to position corps members as mentors and community builders, emphasized their unique ability to shape the aspirations of students in their host communities.

During the presentation, WhatNext Africa’s facilitators drew upon the iconic words of Sir Isaac Newton - “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” Corps members were encouraged to reflect on the teachers, parents, elders, and other figures who guided them through their own difficult stages, and to recognize that for thousands of young people across Nigeria, they themselves now represent those “giants.”

This message was delivered against the backdrop of Nigeria’s youth transition challenge. Over 1.8 million teenagers sit for SSCE each year, while only around 1 million tertiary admission slots are available, leaving nearly 800,000 young people stranded annually without direction or clarity about their future. The sensitization sessions framed this crisis plainly: Nigeria’s young people are not lazy; they are under-mentored, under-guided, and under-supported, particularly at the most important decision point of their lives.

The NYSC WhatNext Collaboration offers corps members a structured approach to resolving this gap. Rather than leaving the responsibility of community engagement to chance, corps members are integrated into State and LGA WhatNext Groups where Supervisors, Community Managers, and Project Officers provide guidance. Assigned schools are geographically accessible, enabling corps members to deliver weekly mentorship sessions using handbooks, scripts, and facilitation guides so that no mentor is left to guess what to teach or how to engage.

Central to the programme is the weekly initiative known as WhatNext Conversations, in which corps members meet students from JSS3 to SS3, helping them develop life plans and understand the options ahead of them. This is complemented by the WhatNext Mentoring pathway, a seven-year continuum supporting students beyond graduation; the Transitions Essay Competition, which allows young people to reflect deeply on their dreams; the Transition Blueprints, including Life After Junior Secondary School and Life After Secondary School, which highlight real-world opportunities; and the forthcoming WhatNext Radio Show, which will amplify these messages and expand mentorship beyond the classroom walls.

The facilitators emphasized that corps members stand to gain more than facilitation experience. They will acquire leadership competence, communication skills, exposure to youth development work, Certificates of Recognition, and data support for engagement. However, the programme urges them to look beyond these benefits. The true reward, they were reminded, lies in legacy: the moment, months or years later, when a young person sends a message saying, “Because of your mentoring, I found a path.”

Across Orientation Camps, each session concluded with corps members standing as a collective, declaring their purpose: “I did not come to NYSC by accident. I was sent to serve. I am a giant. I will lift someone up. I will raise a successor generation.” The speakers encouraged them to embrace the possibility that mentoring even a single child could transform a future, inspire a community, or ignite a generation.
